5 Regions of Ukraine Will Suffer Most From Climate Change

Green Deal researchers have published a report on climate change, which talks about climate change in Ukraine. According to the document, five regions will suffer the most from global warming – Cherkasy, Kherson, Poltava, Kirovohrad, and Vinnytsia. In addition, farmers in Kharkiv, Lviv, Luhansk, and Zhytomyr regions will face big problems.

The study examined two possible scenarios for global warming up to 2100. The scripts were named RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5. In the first case, a temperature increase by 2.4 °C is considered, and 4.3 °C in the second scenario. In the worst-case scenario, RCP 8.5, the researchers predict worsening yields for barley, corn, and sunflower. Farmers will face these problems after 2030. The decrease can be from 10% to 30%, compared to the indicators of 2010. At the same time, an increase in the winter wheat yield is expected by 20-40%. The report also mentions the unpredictability of precipitation. It is especially difficult to predict the amount of precipitation after 2050.

According to experts, the yield of sown areas in Ukraine can be saved by a competent strategy for water resources management. It will help to avoid problems with the harvest of corn and sunflower.
