Drought has already affected more than half of Ukraine's agricultural lands.

Drought has already affected more than half of Ukraine's agricultural lands.

As of the second decade of August, the agrometeorological conditions in Ukraine were very heterogeneous and had unequal impacts on agricultural crops. According to the latest report by specialists from the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, there was no replenishment of soil moisture reserves during this period due to the lack of precipitation, and the topsoil in areas designated for sowing winter crops for the 2025 harvest was weakly moist or dry, with the exception of western regions. At the same time, soil drought was deepening and spreading. Across the country, as the wind intensified to 5 meters per second or more, weak dust storms occurred.

Overall, experts believe that the area affected by drought in the country reached 50-60%. This situation resulted from a prolonged precipitation deficit in most regions during the summer months. It was also influenced by extremely long-lasting heat waves in July and August. Currently, the most challenging conditions, as in the previous decade, have been observed in the central, southeastern, and southern regions of Ukraine and in adjacent areas of other regions. There, the period without effective rains has reached 30-60 days. The most critical situation has developed in the territories of Mykolaiv and Kherson regions, where the highest temperatures and the lowest amount of precipitation were recorded.

It is worth noting that, according to forecasts, this year's harvest of early grain crops in Ukraine is expected to reach about 27 million tons. As previously reported by the Acting Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Taras Vysotsky during a telethon “Unified News,” "the equator of reaping early grains has been crossed." According to him, there are "certain adjustments by regions." In particular, in the southeastern regions, the yield slightly decreased due to the heat, while in western regions, it was higher than anticipated. Overall, the results for early grains match the forecast. He also added that, according to preliminary estimates, this season's export potential for grain crops is projected to be within 40-43 million tons.
