Egypt Bought the First Batch of Wheat from Ukraine Since February 2022

General Authority For Supply Commodities (GASC) concluded the first deal to buy Ukrainian wheat since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The first batch amounted to 175 thousand tons. In general, GASC plans to purchase about 1 million tons of Ukrainian wheat. Delivery time is until July 2023. The grain will be sent to the strategic reserve of Egypt. Also, such purchases will help meet the needs of local bakeries.

According to the Deputy Minister of Internal Trade and Supply of Egypt, Ibrahim Ashmawi, the current stocks of wheat in the country's storage facilities will be enough for another five months. Egypt is the largest grain importer in the world. Every year, the inhabitants of this country consume almost 25 million tons, while the country's farmers produce no more than 12 million tons.

The head of the Egyptian Forum for Economic and Strategic Studies, Rashad Abdo, considers this deal very important. He called contracts for the purchase of Ukrainian wheat "a great step." The execution of contracts becomes possible thanks to the grain deal, which opens the import of agricultural products from Ukraine.
