Export of Fruit and Berry Products in Ukraine Decreased

The export of fruit and berry products in Ukraine decreased in 2020. In particular, exporters sold 8% fewer products abroad compared to 2019. Gross revenue was $238 million.

According to the "Ukrainian Association of Agricultural Export" (UAAE), the indicator of the cost of fruit and berry products in the past year became the second in the history of the country. The greatest profit to farmers was brought by the sale abroad of frozen products ($111 million), nuts ($98 million), fresh apples and pears ($10 million). All of these types of products together accounted for 92% of the total share of fruit and berry products sold.

The UAAE noted that the export of walnuts, as well as apples and pears, suffered the most. In 2019, 68 thousand tons of nuts with and without shells were sold, and in 2020 it was only 39 thousand tons. As for apples and pears, their exports fell from 54 thousand tons to 19 thousand tons. But a record was set for the sale of frozen products – 55 thousand tons.

Poland became the main buyer of fruit and berry products. Revenue amounted to $57.7 million. France is in second place, which bought Ukrainian fruits and berries for $19.7 million. Germany closes the top three with an indicator of $17.2 million. The share of proceeds from EU countries is 77% of all proceeds from the export of fruit and berry products. In terms of cost, the most expensive products were walnuts without shells. The cost of this product was about $3,000 per ton. The price of apples was about $500 per ton.

UAAE believes that the main reason for the decline in exports was quarantine restrictions in the first half of 2020.
