Farmers Ask to Give Grain Storages the Status of Critical Infrastructure

Agricultural companies have applied to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy with a request to recognize grain elevators as critical infrastructure. This was reported by the press service of the Ukrainian Grain Association (UGA).

Farmers hope that the recognition of grain elevators as critical infrastructure will ensure a more stable supply of electricity. Grain storages need a constant supply of electricity, without which it is impossible to ensure the storage and drying of grain. It is necessary to maintain the temperature and transfer of wheat.

Elevators consume a lot of electricity. There is a lot of equipment that needs an energy supply. Generators or solar power plants cannot be the solution to this problem. The cost of storing, drying, and weighing grain will be very high if you use them. As a result, this will affect the price of products.

In addition, elevators are required to accept and ship grain of the same quality. If the granaries are not stably supplied with electricity, it will be impossible to provide this. There are risks of grain spoilage, which will lead to food losses in Ukraine and damage to agricultural companies. At the moment, Ukraine has lost about 10 million tons of storage capacity for agricultural products, and no more should be lost. The recognition of elevators as critical infrastructure will solve these problems through a stable energy supply.
