The State Statistics Service announced the results of agricultural production in 2022

According to the data of the State Statistics Service, the work of the agro-industrial complex of Ukraine in 2022 suffered significantly due to the war. Grain, the basis of Ukrainian agricultural exports, suffered the greatest losses. The loss of more than 32 million tons of the crop in 2022, or 37.4% compared to 2021, significantly hit the industry.

In addition, due to the occupation of territories and battles in the front-line regions, the greatest losses, 75-80%, were experienced by crops in Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Kherson Oblast, which was under occupation for most of 2022, also fell out of the economy. Kharkiv Oblast, which was deoccupied in the fall, lost somewhat less of its harvest, 40-50%. Similar figures were recorded in Mykolaiv, Odesa and Vinnytsia regions. The opposite situation was observed only with buckwheat, the harvest of which in 2022 increased by 39%.

In 2022, Ukraine harvested 24.4% less vegetables than in 2021. In absolute terms, this is a loss of 2.4 million tons of products, half of which are tomatoes. The harvest of tomatoes fell by half, because they were mostly grown in the Kherson region. Potato growing, which is concentrated in other regions, was hardly affected: the decrease was a statistical margin of error: only 2% compared to 2021 figures.

Cherkasy (+5%) and Odesa (+15%) regions helped to compensate for the lost production volume of Kherson region. In addition, the Sumy region, which was partially occupied in the spring, borders the Russian Federation and suffers from enemy shelling, showed an unexpected increase. The region increased the production of cabbage, potatoes and other vegetables.

In addition, in 2022 domestic fruit production declined by 10.2%, with some fruits suffering more. If only 2% less grapes were harvested, 12% less apples, and 13% less strawberries. Fruits were also forced to migrate from their traditional growing regions. In 2022, Cherkassy and Kirovohrad regions increased harvests by 30% and 26%, respectively. Also, more fruits began to be grown in the Lviv region (+9%).

It should be noted that there are new leaders in certain products among the regions. So, almost twice as many grapes were harvested in the Mykolaiv region than a year before, which made the region the second most grape-growing region in Ukraine. The Cherkasy region broke into the top ten regions for cherry cultivation.
