Three crops of potatoes can be grown in a year in Ukraine

Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, associate professor of the Sumy National Agrarian University, Vladyslav Kovalenko, grew three crops of potatoes on the research plot. According to relevant mass media, a scientific research laboratory "Potato Growing Institute of North-East Ukraine" was established at the Sumy National Agrarian University, which investigated the possibility of obtaining several crops of tuberous crops per year. It was there that the scientists came to the conclusion that in the conditions of the Northeast there are all opportunities to significantly increase the production of the vast majority of tuber varieties.

As Vladyslav Kovalenko emphasizes, the most fruitful is the second planting period, i.e. summer, approximately from the beginning of July to the third decade of August, lasting 45 days. The first one is not far behind - from the end of March to the beginning of June of the same duration. But the so-called autumn - the third - is significantly inferior to the previous ones, since it falls on a rather cool season, when the sun is already stingy with heat. But the overall result is optimistic: the gross collection can be at least doubled. Each of the three terms of planting has its own specifics and features, which should be taken into account as much as possible. For example, planting pre-warmed seed material in pre-warmed ridges, which is especially characteristic of early spring. Therefore, scientists in some cases covered the ridges with white agrofiber. It is equally important to keep in mind the fight against pests and diseases that are especially fond of potato fields. At the same time, it is not the same from year to year, so it is necessary to vary the use of certain drugs. The question of variety is also important, so research is ongoing.

It should be noted that in Ukraine there is a practice of harvesting two crops of tubers. In particular, the company "PAEK" in Mykolaiv Oblast is currently planting second-round potatoes. As Yuriy Kormyshkin, the owner of the agricultural holding, noted, if we focus on the results of the summer harvest, the farm should harvest several thousand tons of potatoes in the fall. The company added that about 2,000 hectares of land were set aside for vegetable growing this year. Seedlings were grown in film greenhouses, and now tomatoes and cucumbers are grown, and potatoes, onions, cabbage, zucchini, beets, carrots, bell peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, watermelons, melons, pumpkins, etc. are grown in open ground.
