Ukraine became the second largest supplier of flour in the EU

During 4 years, the export volume of Ukrainian flour decreased by 4.8 times - to 76 thousand tons in 2022. However, Ukraine is currently the second largest supplier of flour in the EU. This is stated in the review of the flour market, which was prepared by the Reform Support Team of the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine together with the Office for Entrepreneurship and Export Development as part of the Export Booster project.

In 2022, as a result of the naval blockade of the Russian Federation, the reorientation of Ukrainian manufacturers to European markets instead of the markets of the Middle East and Africa took place. Thanks to this, in 2022, Ukraine entered the top three exporters of flour to EU countries. Among the countries that became the largest sales markets in 2022, the top included Poland, Romania, Croatia, Hungary and Slovakia, as well as the Republic of Moldova. In 2022, Moldova itself became the largest market for Ukrainian flour with an export volume of 21,000 tons.

Today, Ukraine is among the leaders in the production and export of grain, and this is a strong basis for moving towards primacy, both in the primary processing and export of flour, and later in the deepening of processing and expansion of the export of bakery products. Processing is added value, increased foreign exchange earnings, GDP growth, additional jobs. For example, Turkey is the world leader in the export of flour and has about 1,200 enterprises that produce it. The export of flour is a key direction of its export strategy in 2023. At the same time, Turkey imports a lot of Ukrainian grain and processes it inside the country, exports it to the Middle East, making money from it.
