An Amelioration Project Is Launched in Ukraine With the Participation of the EBRD

The head of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine Roman Leshchenko said that a new project on land reclamation would be introduced in Ukraine. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) will take part in financing the project. Leshchenko informed about the corresponding agreements with the director of the EBRD division for Eastern Europe and the Caucasus Matteo Patrone.

According to Leshchenko, there are almost 5.5 million hectares of reclaimed land in Ukraine. Of these, 2.17 million hectares are irrigated and 3.3 million hectares are drained. The head of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy said that the equipment used for land reclamation is already outdated and needs to be replaced. Leshchenko said that the first implemented amelioration project will affect the southern regions of Ukraine, especially the Odesa region. Matteo Patrone noted that the land reclamation project is consistent with the vision of cooperation between Ukraine and international partners.

Earlier Sergey Leshchenko announced plans to launch pilot projects of irrigation systems in the Mykolaiv, Kherson, and Odesa regions. In the first three years, the project will be implemented in the south of Ukraine, and in the future, it will be scaled to the entire territory of the country. In addition to the EBRD, the World Bank and IFC will also take part in the reclamation program.
