The 2025 harvest started simultaneously with the end of the sowing season.
Harvesting has begun in the south of Ukraine – farms in the Odesa and Mykolaiv regions have started harvesting. In the Izmail, Bolgrad, and Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi districts of the Odesa region, combines have already entered the fields. Local farmers note that, despite dry periods in the spring, winter crops are showing good yields. Harvesting has also gained momentum in the Mykolaiv region – as of June 13, winter barley has already been harvested on 1,400 hectares. Work is underway in all districts except Pervomaiskyi. In total, 425,000 hectares in the region are occupied by winter grains, so farmers are actively preparing for large-scale harvesting. Analysts currently predict that the mass wheat harvest in Ukraine will begin by June 25. Currently, farmers are focused on barley and peas, which ripen earlier.
At the same time, last year's harvest in Ukraine took place in difficult weather conditions and restrictions related to the war. Despite this, the agricultural sector demonstrated resilience, collecting enough grain for domestic consumption and export. This year, the government and farmers are hoping for more favorable conditions, although logistical challenges related to exports remain relevant.
As for sowing, as of June 12, Ukrainian farmers have sown 99% of the planned area of spring grains and legumes, namely 5 million 632 thousand hectares. Likewise, they still have to sow 1% of industrial crops, of which 7 million 827.7 thousand hectares have been sown. Despite the difficult conditions of this year's spring sowing, farmers are catching up with the pace of sowing and have completed sowing for most crops, or have already covered 97-99% of the planned areas, and only for buckwheat this figure is 90%.
Despite the fact that the southern regions have a significant percentage of under-sowing of corn from the planned figures, the total figure for Ukraine even exceeds 100% - due to the rest of the regions, which increased the area under the crop. In particular, the Kherson region did not sow even half of what was planned for corn (although the area under the crop here is generally small). Instead, the Vinnytsia (104.7%), Zaporizhia (104.2%), Kyiv (101.9%), Lviv (103.5%), Mykolaiv (101.3%), Cherkasy (100.4%), Chernihiv (100.6%) regions completed the sowing of grain with an excess of the plan.
The Poltava region remains the leader in terms of the area of sown corn with 455.1 thousand hectares, followed by the Chernihiv region with 412.3 thousand hectares, and the Cherkasy region with 355.3 thousand hectares completes the top three. Statistics say that 1% of the plans remain to be sown for sunflower. The Kherson region is also the most lagging behind in this crop - 77.9%, but in this region there is an under-sowing of all spring crops, and under the current conditions, the projected figures will not be reached. In terms of sunflower sowing areas, as last year, the Dnipropetrovsk region surpassed everyone with an indicator of 867.5 thousand hectares. The Kirovohrad region is in second place with 636.8 thousand hectares, and the Kharkiv region is in third place with 476.0 thousand hectares.
It is currently planned that the 2025 sowing campaign in Ukraine will be completed next week.
