In Ukraine, during the war, some products rose in price by 44% - analysts predict further growth
During the full-scale war in Ukraine, the prices of some products almost doubled - by 44%. As reported by Radio Svoboda journalists in their own research, eggs cost UAH 80 per dozen, butter - UAH 100 - 120, and sour milk cheese - UAH 85 per 350 grams. Prices for services, medicines and transport also increased. In general, inflation has been gaining momentum for three years, and this year it increased by 10%.
As for food products, the main reasons for their increase in prices, experts attribute the failure of the harvest and the destruction of the energy system of Ukraine. Analysts emphasize that this year farmers collected 30% less potatoes, and the price of eggs increased due to the increase in the price of feed, the main component of which is corn. Market participants add that due to power outages and the use of generators, businesses are building these costs into prices.
Overall, in the three years of full-scale war, the overall consumer price index rose by 144.2%, a 44.2% increase. Food and non-alcoholic beverages rose in price by 50.8%, transport by 57.1%, and education by 38.4%. Fruits rose in price the most - by 109.8%, oils (except olive) the least - by 6.7%. And regarding the future, experts warn about the movement of Ukraine according to a pessimistic scenario, although the economy still maintains a certain balance.
If we focus on fruits and vegetables, we can say that in autumn and early winter, their prices are affected by traditional seasonal factors, but bad weather, which reduced the harvest, was added to them. In addition to heat and drought, the dynamics of fruit and vegetable prices are also significantly affected by the speed and volume of supply, the cost of storage and transportation, increased electricity tariffs for industrial producers, as well as fuel prices. For example, in the last month alone, the prices of vegetables in the borscht set have increased by an average of 9%. And in December, the price of vegetables is expected to increase by 15%. Cabbage and onions, as well as potatoes, can be added to the price. Cucumbers and tomatoes have risen in price at record prices in Ukraine. According to experts, the prices of cucumbers are now at a record high level. And the average price of greenhouse tomatoes on wholesale markets is UAH 107.5 per kg, which is 68% higher than last year. In general, both domestic and imported vegetables are present on the market. However, due to the shortage of local products, the share of imports, in particular from Turkey, is increasing. Imported vegetables become more expensive due to logistics costs and customs duties.
But we eat not only vegetables. For example, the cost of bread and bakery products will constantly and significantly increase until the end of the year. This is associated with an increase in the cost of raw materials, energy sources and logistics, because only flour doubled in price during the year. As the first vice-president of the All-Ukrainian Association of Bakers Yury Duchenko stated, the price increase is expected to be approximately 10-15%. Bread prices have been rising before - by 5-10% during the summer and early autumn
But the National Bank explained why products are becoming more expensive. Economists said that it was the hot weather without rains that affected the yield, ripening time and quality parameters of a number of vegetables and fruits, which affected their supply.
