The restoration of Ukrainian soils will take almost 30 years

According to ecologists, military aggression by Russia has caused damage to the ecosystems of Ukraine in the amount of 1 trillion 260 billion UAH. And it takes almost 30 years to completely restore the fertile layer.

Now there are several ways to restore soil fertility. Reclamation is about renewing and increasing fertility, which can be achieved with conventional fertilizers, but it is not completely natural. However, experts offer solutions that allow you to restore fertility naturally, even using waste recycling.

Reclamation is one of the methods of soil recovery. This process involves cutting off the topsoil that is most affected. However, this layer is less fertile, so growing crops on bare ground can be difficult. Soil restoration technologies are costly and time-consuming, but solutions are currently being sought to make this process more economical by using natural products instead of chemical fertilizers.

Currently, new technologies are already being used in various regions, in particular, in the de-occupied lands of the Mykolaiv region, as well as in the Vinnytsia, Lviv, and Ternopil regions. Although Ukraine does not yet have a state program on soil restoration, research is being conducted at the level of private farms. However, Ukraine should currently develop soil cleaning technologies and borrow the experience of other countries that are already implementing similar projects.

It is worth noting that the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal emphasized that the damage to Ukrainian ecosystems is currently estimated at 65 billion US dollars. After all, a third of Ukrainian forests and 20% of nature conservation areas of Ukraine have already been affected by the war. 35% of Europe's biodiversity, which Ukraine possesses, is under threat. In this regard, the government official named several key tasks for which a joint strategy should be agreed. This is tracking, registration and reporting on all environmental consequences, impacts, losses and damages of the war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine; collection of valuable high-level reviews and technical comments from partners of our country; working out the next joint steps to bring the Russian aggressor to justice for all environmental crimes committed against Ukraine.
