Ukraine took 7th place in the top ten producers of walnuts

Ukraine took 7th place in the top ten world producers of walnuts in shell according to average annual production volumes. The average annual production of such nuts in Ukraine from 1994 to 2022 is more than 87.2 thousand tons.

According to FAOSTAT, China is the world's largest producer of in-shell walnuts with an average annual output of more than 705.8 thousand tons. The USA is in second place with more than 405,000 tons. Rounding out the top three is Iran with an average annual production of more than 255.6 thousand tons. Turkey, Burkina Faso and Mexico occupy the 4th, 5th and 6th places, respectively. Ukraine ranks 7th ahead of Chile, Romania and France.

According to FAOSTAT, 57% of the world production of walnuts in shell is in Asian countries, 25.5% of the world volume is produced by the countries of the American continent. Europe accounts for 14.4%, Africa - 3%. Another 0.1% of global production is concentrated in Oceania.

It should be noted that the curve of the world production of walnuts in the shell is fully correlated with the curve of the area under the culture: in the years when the production increased, the area under the nut was higher and vice versa. Data show that from 1994 to 2011, there was a steady increase in world walnut production. After the peak in 2011, there was a certain decline, but since 2013, growth has resumed. So, in 2022, more than 3.8 million tons of walnuts in shell were produced in the world.
