Ukrainians prefer poultry and beef

According to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, this year, Ukrainians consumed an average of 27 kg of poultry and 7.4 kg of beef per person. Last year, these indicators were 26.2 kg and 7 kg, respectively. At the same time, pork consumption decreased - in 2023, Ukrainians consumed 19.8 kg of pork per year, and in 2022 - 20.3 kg.

In line with consumption, production also increased: 1.3 million tons of poultry meat was produced, and 272 thousand tons of beef. Increasing domestic production made it possible to reduce the amount of imports of both types of meat by 19,000 tons. 61,000 tons of poultry meat were imported, and only 5,000 tons of beef. The import of pork also decreased - up to 41,000 tons. In general, the consumption of pork, beef and poultry increased from 54.1 kg in 2022 to 54.7 kg in 2023. The import of all three types of meat decreased to 108,000 tons.

Other products show their own price dynamics. In particular, prices for buckwheat are falling rapidly in Ukraine, so next year it may be sown less due to unprofitability and a shortage will occur. Taras Vysotskyi, First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, announced this. The expert noted that due to the surplus of the corresponding product, farmers in Ukraine began to export buckwheat for the first time. According to him, its main consumers in Europe are millions of Ukrainian refugees. Taras Vysotsky also said that these people managed to create a significant demand and spread the culture of buckwheat consumption. The expert added that in such conditions, European chains are forced to purchase the appropriate product in Ukraine. Taras Vysotskyi reported that the Ukrainian government has removed all restrictions on the export of buckwheat that were in effect before.

In general, consumer prices increased by 5.1% in November 2023 compared to the same month last year. According to the data of the State Statistics Service, the prices of food products and soft drinks increased by 2.8% during the reporting month. Compared to November 2022, the price of meat and meat products rose the most — by 13%. The prices of butter increased by 9.6%, milk - by 9.4%. Bread went up in price by 8.7%, cheese by 7.9%, fish by 4.3%, pasta by 0.7%. At the same time, eggs became the leaders in price reduction in November, the prices of which decreased by 22.3%. Sunflower oil fell in price by 12.8%, vegetables by 8.2%, sugar by 3.8%, fruits by 2.1%.
